About forty years ago, I made an observation that eventually led to this artwork.

I encountered it in an ordinary, familiar landscape. There were stacks of freshly milled lumber, with spacers placed between the planks to create gaps for drying. The silhouette resembled a horizontal blind, with the background visible through the gaps between the boards. Yet at the points where the spacers were placed, the background was blocked, as if a single vertical column existed there. This phenomenon suggested to me that two forms might be able to coexist within a single form. I named this idea “Series – Overlap” and have continued to develop and create artworks based on it.

My encounter with Corten steel, a material that can be used outdoors for many years because a dense, highly adhesive rust layer forms on its surface over time and acts as a protective film, allowed me to realize this series exactly as I had envisioned. My sculpture “Overlap – Into the Sky (K-69)” consists of a structure made from 256 layers of Corten steel plates. Within this structure, two forms coexist. One is a spiral form rising from the ground. The other is a configuration of fourteen spheres that gradually ascend within it. Through the coexistence of these forms, I express the feeling of suppressed emotions slowly being released into the sky.

約40年前、私はある観察からこの作品へと至りました。それは、ごくありふれた、見慣れた風景の中で出会ったものでした。製材されたばかりの木材が積み重ねられ、板と板の間には乾燥のための隙間を作るためにスペーサーが挟まれていました。そのシルエットは横長のブラインドのようで、板と板の間の隙間から背景が見えていました。しかし、スペーサーが挟まれた部分では背景が遮られ、まるでそこに一本の垂直な柱が存在するかのようでした。この現象から、私は二つの形態が一つの形態の中に共存できるのではないかという可能性を感じました。私はこのアイデアを「シリーズ - 重なり」と名付け、以来、このシリーズを基に作品を制作し続けています。

長年屋外で使用できる素材であるコルテン鋼との出会いは、私が思い描いていた通りのシリーズを実現することを可能にしてくれました。コルテン鋼は、時間の経過とともに表面に緻密で密着性の高い錆の層が形成され、保護膜として機能する素材です。私の彫刻作品「重なり- 空へ（K-69）」は、256枚のコルテン鋼板を重ね合わせた構造体です。この構造体の中には、2つの形態が共存しています。一つは地面から立ち上がる螺旋状の形態、もう一つはその内部で徐々に上昇していく14個の球体です。これらの形態の共存を通して、抑圧された感情がゆっくりと空へと解き放たれていく感覚を表現しています。

　彫刻“Metamorphosis - Time and Tide”は時の流れをテーマにしています。この立方体は、12枚のコルテン鋼の平板を加熱してねじり、単一の形状にすることによって構築され、まるで折り紙のように劇的に形を変えました。この作品では鋼板片面を「日本の赤」に塗装しています。日本において、この色は神社の赤い鳥居や朱漆器の色など、大切なものを保護する色として人々の生活に馴染み深い色です。反対面はコルテン鋼錆び仕上げが施されています。これは時間の経過とともに変化します。相反する性質を持つ表と裏が調和し絡み合い、不思議な空間を創り出します。

The sculpture "Metamorphosis-Time and Tide" is based on the theme of the passage of time. The cube was constructed by heating and twisting 12 flat Corten steel plates into a single shape. It changes shape dramatically, like ORIGAMI. In this work, one side of the steel plate is painted Japanese red. In Japan, this color is familiar to people in daily life, as it is used to protect precious things, such as the red Torii gates of shrines and the color of vermilion lacquerware. The other side is Corten steel with a rust finish. This will change over time. These contradictory front and back surfaces harmonize and intertwine to create a mysterious space.

概要：スカルプチャー・バイ・ザ・シーは、世界最大級の彫刻展示会として、壮大な海岸沿いの散歩道は、3週間かけて長さ2kmの彫刻公園に変わり、100以上の彫刻が展示され、オーストラリアや世界中からアーティストが集まりました。

Sculpture by the Sea returns to the Bondi to Tamarama Beach coastal walk as the world’s largest free to the public sculpture exhibition in 2023. The spectacular coastal walk will once again be transformed into a 2km long sculpture park over three weeks featuring more than 100 sculptures by artists from Australia and across the world.

水面に広がる波紋、葉上の雨の雫・・森羅万象の中、私はこの無駄のない形「円」「球」に特別な意味を持ったカタチとして関心を持ってきました。

今回は「間(kan/K) シリーズ」の新作 3点 (K64～67)を展示いたしました。

会期：2023年5/12(金)～6月27日(火) (会期中無休)

開館時間：11:00 ～ 20:00 (最終日は 17:00まで展示)

　私が金属と出会わなければ、空想好きな具象作家になっていたかもしれません。周りの子供達が幼稚園から帰ってくるまでの退屈な時間に、木っ端をノコギリで切って、釘でそれらを打ち付けてモノを作っていた子供の頃、まず釘箱の曲がった釘等を、ペンチを金床にして金槌でまっすぐに伸ばします。左手の指には、この時にできる血豆がいつもありました。私の金属（鉄）との思い出はこの記憶から始まります。

　上京して知ったクリスト、ジャンヌ=クロード作の作品 Running Fence (1976)との出会いで、頭の中に描いたものを何でも作っていいんだと気付き、今まで「間 (kan/K) シリーズ」(1982年～)、「Circle (C) シリーズ」(1992年～)、「Metamorphosis (M) シリーズ」(2003年～) の作品達を制作・発表してきました。今回はその中の「間(kan/K) シリーズ」の新作 4点 (K64～67)を展示いたします。今は左指に血豆はありませんが、あの頃の鉄の匂いを忘れずにモノを作っています。

If I had not encountered iron, I might have become a figurative artist fond of daydreams. In my childhood I made objects by cutting pieces of wood with a saw and fastening them together with nails during the boring period that passed until the neighborhood children returned from kindergarten. At such times, first of all, with a hammer in my right hand, I pounded bent nails from the nail box onto pliers as a metal base to straighten them lengthwise. If I missed my aim in the slightest way, I would end up hitting my left thumb and index finger and consequently always developed blood blisters on them at such times. My memories of iron begin with these recollections.

Once I encountered the “Running Fence” work of Christo and Jeanne Claude after I moved to Tokyo, I realized it was okay to make anything that was conjured up inside my head. Therefore, up to now I have created and presented works like the “kan/K series” (1982~~), the “Circle series” (1992~~), and the “Metamorphosis (M) series” (2003~~). This time I will be exhibiting four new works for the “kan/K series” (K64-67). I no longer have blood blisters nowadays on my left thumb and index finger. Nevertheless, I have been creating works while not forgetting the metallic smell of those bygone days.
